What a brilliant raffle prize, sod winning a car or a large cash sum... I hope Niall McGinn appreciates these little things that make Korean football so great.

What's the deal with promotion and relegation between Basic and Advanced?

Bottom two teams in the Advance are dropping down at the end of the season, the top team in the Basic gets automatically promoted and then the winner of the playoffs (2nd-5th) will also go up.

We're halfway through the Basic season and already the Zebras cannot gain automatic promotion. Interestingly they've scored the same number of goals (13) as Buyeo who sit third in the table, yet Buyeo are fifteen points ahead of them and have won five of their ten matches. Zebras have scored more goals than Goyang though which is something...

Round 16
[Match #] Result (Attendance)

[91] Chuncheon 0:1 Gyeongju (72)
[92] Cheongju City 1:1 Cheongju FC (463)
[93] Pocheon 3:0 Jeonju (427)
[94] Hwaseong 0:0 Gimpo (145)
[95] Icheon 2:3 Yangpyeong (197)
[96] Paju 4:3 Yangju (215)

A share of the points in the Cheongju derby, Gyeongju (10th) put some distance between themselves and Chuncheon (11th) in the battle against relegation, a win for Yangpyeong sees them leap into 5th spot (Icheon could have done the same with a win -- instead they're 9th), and Yangju remain at the bottom of the standings.

The Paju-Yangju match wasn't even a tense back and forth affair. Paju went up 4:0 in the first half (12' 15' 28' 40') and it took Yangju until the end of the match to make the scoreline look respectable (60' 85' 91'). Didn't go to this one, but it looks like Paju did make four substitutions in the second half ... I guess that means we're better than their B team?

Do those crowd numbers look to be realistic, arrived at by a process of addition and maths, or are they still just inflated guesses?

If you open the gates and let anyone in for free, how do you count the crowd? By actually just counting the people in the crowd? Sounds like a lot of bother, but maybe the league makes them do it. They have league observers at each match in K3, don't they?

Round 17
[Match Number] Result (Attendance)

[97] Gyeongju 1:1 Cheongju City (212)
[98] Cheongju FC 2:1 Jeonju (152)
[99] Hwaseong 0:0 Pocheon (155)
[100] Yangpyeong 1:0 Paju (234)
[101] Gimpo 0:1 Chuncheon (156)
[102] Yangju 1:3 Icheon (148)

Cheongju City should have done better against a poor Gyeongju side, Jeonju miss a chance to enter the play-off spots, Hwaseong put on their big boy pants to hold Pocheon to a draw, Yangpyeong see off Paju to reach third in the standings, second-bottom Chuncheon beat second-top Gimpo on a Sunday match (Two K3 Advanced matches over the weekend? Bonanza!), and Yangju ... well, they're still bottom.

Attended Yangju's match and had really high hopes after seeing their first half performance. The 1:0 goal came after our winger tore down the right touchline and sent a cross in the box that was fired in by one of our forwards.

Icheon pulled level in the second half with a carbon copy of Yangju's opener then went ahead following a scramble in front of goal. Our keeper parried a shot that looked to be headed out of bounds until he got a hand to it. Icheon made a clamor that it had gone out but the ref gestured for play to go on and Icheon scored in the resulting confusion. Their third came from a penalty when one of their players was tripped on the outer edge of the box.

Disappointing to see Yangju defeated once again this season but it was an entertaining match and they looked capable of giving Icheon a fight, so it's not the end of the world. (Maybe just the end of life in the K3 Advanced ...)

Saw an Icheon fan during halftime with a 2017 K3 League Guidebook and asked where he got it -- 'Pocheon' was the response. Figures. As much as I might have wanted a copy, I didn't want to head up to duck central to get one. Managed to get the match announcer's guidebook by the end of halftime though, so that's been happily added to my collection. (Think I have one for every season of the K3 League save last season now.)

Did Goyang Citizen in the other thread, but here's Pocheon Citizen for the K3 Advanced:

- 34 players listed on the team roster
- 14 players were playing at a K-League Challenge side before signing for Pocheon (4 came from Chungju Hummel)
- 5 players were playing at a National League side before signing for Pocheon
- 4 players were playing at a K-League Classic side before signing for Pocheon
- 3 players came from fellow K3 clubs (Gyeongju x2 Yangju x 1)
- 1 player was playing overseas before signing for Pocheon (Bonner SC 01/04 E.V.)

Round 18
[Match #] Result (Attendance)

[103] Gyeongju 1:3 Cheongju FC (157)
[104] Yangpyeong 2:1 Pocheon (145)
[105] Hwaseong 1:0 Paju (157)
[106] Jeonju 1:1 Gimpo (85)
[107] Cheongju City 2:1 Icheon (557)
[108] Chuncheon 4:1 Yangju (101)

Pocheon lose their first match of the season

In other news, not many people like K3 football in Jeonju, lots of people like K3 football in Cheongju, the same number of people like K3 football in Gyeongju and Hwaseong, and Yangju have the fourth best attack in the league (27 goals scored) but were let down once again by their defense (40 goals conceded now).

Yangju's relegation to Basic is confirmed.

Yangju 0:3 Yangpyeong (Yang-Derby? :P )

And Pocheon lose their second match of the season.

Round 19
[Match #] Result (Attendance)

[109] Gyeongju 2:0 Pocheon (186)
[110] Cheongju FC 0:0 Paju (125)
[111] Icheon 2:0 Hwaseong (317)
[112] Yangju 0:3 Yangpyeong (125)
[113] Chuncheon 3:0 Jeonju (45)
[114] Cheongju City 2:2 Gimpo (585) (Played 10 September)

As has been pointed out, Pocheon lose their second match of the season (against Gyeongju) and Yangju are relegated to the K3 Basic with their result against Yangpyeong today. Chuncheon with a very low attendance figure today, even by K3 standards, but they do pull themselves even further away from the relegation play-off spot with a win against fellow strugglers Jeonju.

Got to Yangju's ground at 4:30 and thought I was early to a 5pm kick-off. Turns out the match times were moved forward to 3pm for September so I only caught the last 10 minutes. Still enough time to see Yangju have a goal inexplicably disallowed for offside, the Yangpyeong keeper punch two of his players in the head while trying to clear a cross, and the entire Yangpyeong team celebrating heavily after the final whistle. I'm not surprised Yangpyeong won, really. They have an official team bus.

Looking on the bright side, we'll have some nearby away matches next season against the likes of Goyang, Uijeongbu, and Seoul United. I had a couple representatives from the club mention to me after the match that the team is going to look a lot better next season, as they've already started preparing. I guess we'll see how that goes ...

That's good to hear. Relegation isn't the end of the world and while there is some loss of face, it can often open up new opportunities.

Round 20
[Match #] Result (Attendance)

[115] Hwaseong 3:1 Gyeongju (155)
[116] Yangpyeong 1:0 Cheongju FC (150)
[117] Pocheon 0:0 Paju (422)
[118] Jeonju 2:0 Yangju (204)
[119] Icheon 2:0 Gimpo (151)
[120] Cheongju City 2:1 Chuncheon (209)

Remember when Paju and Gyeongju were strong sides in the K3 League, challenging for a spot near the top of the table? Now they're sitting second- and third-bottom in the standings. New side Yangpyeong, meanwhile, is flying high in second, just 5 points behind Pocheon. And speaking of last year's champions, the team has only collected 1 point in the past three rounds. Have they been giving more playing time to fringe players over the past few weeks? Have a couple of key players finished their military service and left the club for their previous team? Feel free to check the line-ups/club website and let me know.

In other league news, Icheon pick up a nice win against Gimpo, Hwaseong win against Gyeongju as I'm sure most would have expected, Cheongju City take full points against Chuncheon with an 88th minute winner (4 yellow cards in that one), and Jeonju score early and late to beat Yangju (with 5 yellow cards in that match).

Round 21
[Match #] Result (Attendance)

[121] Gyeongju 2:1 Yangpyeong (225)
[122] Cheongju FC 0:0 Hwaseong (156)
[123] Pocheon 2:1 Gimpo (321)
[124] Paju 3:3 Chuncheon (143)
[125] Icheon 2:2 Jeonju (165)
[126] Yangju 2:2 Cheongju City (124)

Pocheon officially became K3 Advanced champions over the weekend -- their win coupled with Yangpyeong's loss creates an 8 point gap between first and second in the standings.

At the other end of the table, Jeonju (26 pts), Gyeongju (25 pts), Chuncheon (24 pts), and Paju (23 pts) are all within 3 points of each other and any of them - apart from Jeonju - could be the second side joining Yangju in relegating to the K3 Basic this season.

Paju (11) is hosting Gyeongju (9), Chuncheon (10) is hosting Icheon (6), and Jeonju (8) is hosting Cheongju City (4). That Paju - Gyeongju match could be exciting ...
