Groundhopping

Postby Gerd Bibimbapper » Tue Apr 13, 2010 3:44 pm

Went to the FA Cup semi-final between Pompey and Spurs on Sunday.
First visit to the 'new' Wembley (first visit since the days of Home Internationals and Live Aid, for those of you old enough to remember), the atmosphere was absolutely mental and the result fully deserved in my opinion.

Apparently the FA Cup Final's no longer a route into Europe these days though.:albino:

Had a thoroughly enjoyable trip on the London Eye too. (saw Wembley again in the distance too, the weather was superb)

Hoping to take in a game in France at the weekend.

Photos will have to wait until I return to the Land of Oz!

Wow, what a game to take in. You do get about, don't you.

Live Aid! All we hear is Radio ga ga, Radio goo goo...wasn't actually there - bit too young for that, but remember this like it was yesterday. It left me obsessed with all things Queen/Freddie Mercury for a great many years...

RENNES 0 NANCY 0 Sat April 17 2010 - 7pm KO
Went to this Ligue 1 game - a disappointing affair between a side that won't make Europe, and one that won't go down.
The French newspaper I bought gave it 2 stars (out of 6), one more than the other nil-nil of the day (Nice-Lens), so at least I wasn't at the worst worst game in Ligue 1 8).
Sat behind the goal - the Rennes 'tifosi' seemed to be split into 2 distinct groups, one red (60+ geriatrics and nerds), the other black (teenage cool cats). 2 of the red geriatrics were identical twins, even the gestures they used to heckle their own players were identical!
Seeing this was worth the admission money alone (9 euros), and I really enjoyed seeing the rows of brasserie and food stalls lining the route to and opposite/outside the stadium.
So many aspects of this match made me appreciate that so much of what makes the live football experience so great has little to do with what actually goes on on the pitch.

Beautiful weather for the 3 days I spent in Brittany/Normandy, and I was able to fulfill a long-standing ambition by visiting Mont St Michel.
Although this was my umpteenth visit to France, I was also reminded why French women are so hot......! :smt007
Photos will have to wait until I return to Oz - whenever this volcanic cloud lets up!

Finally made it back to Oz.
Nice to see the volcano obeying the orders of the aviation authorities and stopping spewing ash right on cue. :albino:
Anyway, some photos of the 2nd FA Cup Semi-Final...

That's quite a comeback from 6-2 down with 25 mins to go.

Scottish Cup

Dundee Utd 3 - 0 Ross County

Good to see a cup final without any Old Firm teams involved.

I'm now living about ten minutes' walk from Hampden, and it was certainly a relief to have two relatively inoffensive teams involved in the final (although United are still scumbags). I was quite disappointed that Ross County didn't give it more of a go as having already beaten Hibs and Celtic they were more than capable of beating United... neither side were particularly impressive in the first half and it took a bit of a goalkeeping mistake in the second half for United to take the lead. County then got themselves into gear and of course that gave United space to knock in a second and a third, but think they'll regret not really having a go at a side they could have beaten.

Just checking out the UK fixtures next weekend and noticed that on the Sunday Motherwell will be taking on Hibs at Fir Park at 11 o'clock in the f'ing morning!! I appreciate, it's not a huge distance from Edinburgh, but still - 11am on a Sunday seems a little unreasonable.

RAPID WIEN 3 WACKER INNSBRUCK 3, Sat Dec 11 2010 - 6.30pm KO
Went to this Austrian Bundesliga 1 game - a cracking game of football, final round before the winter break.
15,000 fans, brilliant atmosphere, plenty of flares, and even a pitch invasion at the end (the Rapid fans one end running the entire length of the pitch to goad the visiting fans down at the other) - this game had everything.
Freezing cold, but well worth it. I`ve long had a thing about going to see Rapid, and it was a terrific experience.
Photos to come when (hopefully) I get back to the UK!
Cheers.

Also took in Innsbruck, and paid a visit to Wacker Innsbruck's ground (used in Euro 2008) while I was there.
Lots of Winter Olympics venues close by.
