This will be their first season in the second tier of US football following their switch from the North American Soccer League. It remains to be seen how well they do because they pretty much finished bottom of the combined standings for the 2017 NASL season and this is meant to be something of a step up.
NASL was the U.S. division two up to (and including) the 2017 season; USL was division three. However, the NASL has essentially collapsed (a long, sordid tale there), so the USL will become division two for the 2018 season. In essence, Indy Eleven will remain
a division-two club, despite changing leagues.
A decent appointment for Rennie, who, like his late compatriot Porterfield, will likely have a tough time ever managing professionally in the UK after many years overseas.
