ACL: East vs West final proposed

Postby Holyjoe » Tue Nov 26, 2013 6:47 am

It's not difficult to see why this has been proposed, I really hope it doesn't come off though:

ACL: East vs West final proposed
25 November 2013

Kuala Lumpur: The AFC Competitions Committee, which met under the chairmanship of Yousuf Al Serkal, recommended to play the AFC Champions League on zonal basis until the semi-finals which will guarantee an East vs West final for the next three years.

The committee also proposed to the AFC Executive Committee to maintain home-and-away final for the premier club competition of the continent based on the success of the 2013 AFC Champions League finals.

The members also retained the AFC Cup format of one-off final and recommended that six teams, who will qualify for the AFC President’s Cup final stage will take part in the AFC Cup playoff from 2015 onwards.

The 2014 AFC President’s Cup will be the last edition of this competition and the centralised qualifiers will determine the six teams which will play in the 2015 AFC Cup playoffs .

The committee also discussed and approved the slot allocation for the AFC Champions League 2014 and gave their recommendations to the AFC Executive Committee.

It was also proposed to move the 2014 AFC Challenge Cup to the Philippines from Maldives if the latter does not start required renovation work by December 15, 2013.

DPR Korea’s request to play in the AFC President’s Cup was also approved and recommended to the AFC Executive Committee.

All the recommendations of this committee will be presented to the AFC Executive Committee for its approval.

The AFC doing their best to get an Arab team to the finals. The only benefit of this proposal is less travel.

Yeah, with this year's rise in fortunes for the Chinese and Japanese clubs in the ACL, it's pretty apparent all 3 of the best leagues are in the North-East, so the AFC is just trying to help its scandalously favoured Western Asian countries.

As the group phase is already set up this way, this proposal would literally shorten only two away trips for the 2 clubs that end up going all the way to the final. There's no real economic incentive here. Also, I think competitions should be set up so that group-rivals wouldn't meet again until the final. This is bush-league, and their motivation is completely transparent.

The next step from here then is to try and replicate it at international level and have World Cup qualification split into East Asia and West Asia. No benefit to the nations in the East but that would of course guarantee two West Asian sides qualify.

Perhaps the EAFF should revive the A3 Champions Cup now? That'd be a nice little earner for the champions of Korea, China and Japan, they could make it a four team thing and bring in the A-League winners as well.
