2-0 to Korea, Son with a second late on to seal it. That's them fucked for scoring in the semi-final then.

Nipped put for some Jiggae and managed to catch both goals. I'll take the assist. Whatever you think of Cha du ri, his fitness levels are unbelievable. Great 60m run to set up the second for Son, who was unable to stand after he blasted it in.

He had the flu about a week ago. He only played 40 mins against Oz but even by the end of that match he looked the most tired.

So it's Iraq then and not Iran that Korea will face in the semi-finals after Iraq won 7-6 on penalties after a 3-3 draw.

A great result for Korea who now have a brilliant chance of reaching the final, though that was the train of thought ahead of the semi-final in 2007 when Iraq beat Korea on penalties on their way to winning the tournament.

Would love to see the UAE put Japan out now :-)

And out Japan go, beaten on penalties by the UAE with Honda and Kagawa both missing from the spot for them.

Not to put too much pressure on Stielike & co but this tournament really looks like theirs to lose now.

I'd still make Australia favourites over Korea, especially since they lost in the group match.

But well done UAE. This tournament needed a shock. And match of the tournament in Canberra between Iraq and Iran too, with four goals in extra time. Well worth checking out the highlights. It's been a great tournament so far.

Missed both games tonight just when it was getting interesting....

Annoyingly one of my exec students predicted UAE to knock Japan out and I took the piss out of him....

Are Iran going to get anywhere with this? A decision needs to be made pretty soon:

Iraq's quarter-final win thrown into question after Iran claims ineligible player
24 Jan 2015

The AFC Asian Cup has been rocked by allegations that Iraq fielded an ineligible player in Friday's dramatic quarter-final win over Iran.

Sources have told TWG that the Iranian Football Federation has made a formal complaint to FIFA concerning the eligibility of Iraq midfielder Alaa Abdul Zahra.

The complaint stems from an alleged doping violating during the time Abdul Zahra spent last year playing with Iranian club side Tractor Sazi.

An AFC spokesperson confirmed to TWG that it is aware of the case and is awaiting further information from FIFA.

Iraq beat Iran on penalties after a 3-3 draw in Canberra on Friday to earn the right to face Korea Republic in the semi-finals in Sydney on Monday.

It's understood that the Iranian side has delayed its exit from Australia awaiting a response from the world governing body, which is expected on Saturday evening.

Iran's National Anti-Doping Agency deputy Ramin Tabatabaei told news agency Tasnim that Abdul Zahra failed a drug test when he was playing in the country.

“I informed Mr Sajjadi (vice-president of Professional and Athletic Sports Development) when we understood Team Melli would play Iraq in the quarter-final,” Tabatabaei said.

From the tournament rule-book;
Article 11.7 Protests regarding the eligibility of Participating Players registered in the Final Registration squad by each Member Association must be submitted in writing to the AFC no later than five (5) days before the opening Match of the Competition.

It sounds like there was never a formal decision by either FIFA or the AFC to ban him. He would have had the right to appeal and all that, which never happened, so this protest is not going anywhere. But there's a 225 page thread about this on the PersianFootball forum, started after the match. 225 pages of bitching and moaning and demanding they join UEFA! :smt119 It brings tears to the eyes.

What they desperately need to do, especially in tournaments like this, is pre-clear the entire 23 man squad before the tournament starts. If there's anyone in the 23-man squad who needs to serve a suspension or is ineligible because they're the wrong gender it should be made clear at the start of the tournament and once dealt with everyone else should forever hold their peace.

They should probably screen all players before regular internationals actually. How hard can it be? The federation keeps an up-to-date list of suspensions and checks the squad against it. Having teams kicked out half way through a tournament, or even letting teams play ineligible players and subsequently awarding them a 3-0 loss, is just madness. How would you let Iran stay in, when he also played against Jordan in the groups and three points for them would have put them through to the quarter-final against Iran? Which teams go through shouldn't be decided anywhere except on the pitch.

Talking of which, Seongnam's Sever Djeparov spent the entire Korea match on the bench for Uzbekistan. An AFC quarter-final against a team he knows very well and you leave a two-time Asian Player of the Year on the bench for the whole match?

Jung Sung-ryong nowhere near the first eleven and Korea create an all-time Asian Cup clean sheet record...
