Group D: Iran, Saudi Arabia, Jordan or Kyrgyzstan, Australia or Taiwan

The first round matches (the likes of Australia v Taiwan) will be played

Korea¡¯s Olympic team was in action recently (for the first time since the Athens Olympics). Last week they drew 1-1 with Japan (in Changwon, Korea) and earlier in the week the two teams played out another 1-1 draw in Tokyo.

Got the Korea v Yemen game on the telly... rather dull stuff livened up by Park Joo-young getting sent off for charging tits-first into a Yemen player who chopped him down.

The bloke went down like a sack of spuds and rolled around in agony long enough for PJY to get his marching orders... he can probably consider himself extremely unfortunate, but it's funny all the same.

Korea's match against Uzbekistan on March 28th is going to be held at the Ansan Wa~ Stadium, which I think will be the first (and possibly only ;) ) match held at that venue.

If I recall, the Goyang stadium was used for one match not long after it was completed and then has never been used again. Goyang KB did put it to use but they might not be playing there much longer ;) At least the churchy folk will be able to put the Ansan venue to good use now that Hallelujah are in town.

A little busy these days so just a cut and paste job...

Uzbekistan 0-1 S Korea

GROUP F

Korea Republic, quarterfinalists in Athens 2004, had to bank on a late Baek Ji-hoon goal to keep Uzbekistan at bay 1-0 though the narrow win was enough to secure their berth in the final round.

The match looked destined for a draw when Baek struck seven minutes from time to give the Koreans their fourth consecutive victory. They are the only team other than Japan to boast of a perfect record thus far.

Uzbekistan¡¯s defeat left them in a scrap for second spot with the UAE who beat Yemen 2-0. Yemeni Zaher Fareed scored an own goal in the 50th minute and six minutes later Amer Mubarak doubled the advantage.

STANDINGS: 1. Korea Republic 12, 2. UAE 6, 3. Uzbekistan 6, 4. Yemen 0

It's quite funny how these things work out, but Daejeon's regular goalkeeper Choi Eun-sung went off injured in the game against Daegu on Sunday, so the Olympic squad goalkeeper Yang Dong-won made his professional debut as a substitute. After waiting so long for a chance to make a couple of starts for the Daejeon first team he was away off to Yemen with the Olympic team, and another goalie (Yoo Jae-hoon) made his professional debut tonight against FC Seoul.
