Friendly v Iran (18/11/14 in Tehran)

Postby Holyjoe » Thu Jul 31, 2014 7:14 am

Preparation for the Asian Cup is shaping together nicely, and the KFA have arranged what is a rare proper away trip to face Iran. This will ensure they lock horns with the Iranians around Asian Cup time as the two countries have faced each other at the quarter-final stage in each of the last five editions of the tournament, however this time around if Korea progress from the group stages they can't face Iran until at least the semi-finals...

This appears to be Iran's first full international since the World Cup. They didn't have a comprehensive build up to the WC, and the pattern is being repeated here it seems, before the ANC.

Matches between South Korea and Iran have been very tight in recent years:

2013 South Korea 0-1 Iran (WCq)
2012 Iran 1-0 South Korea (WCq)

2011 Iran 0-1 (aet) South Korea (ANC)
2010 South Korea 0-1 Iran
2009 South Korea 1-1 Iran (WCq)
2009 Iran 1-1 South Korea (WCq)
2007 Iran 0-0 South Korea (ANC) K won on pen

Iran 1-0 South Korea

S. Korea loses to Iran 1-0

South Korea lost to Iran 1-0 in its last football friendly of 2014 in Tehran on Tuesday, with the home side getting a late goal.

Substitute Sardar Azmoun was credited with the winner in the 82nd minute on a controversial goal line play, as Iran remained undefeated against South Korea at Azadi Stadium in its capital city.

The 19-year-old Rubin Kazan forward pounced at the chance to cash in after Javad Nekounam’s free-kick had hit both posts.
