Venezuela & Uruguay friendlies (September 2014)

Postby Holyjoe » Sat Jul 19, 2014 7:09 pm

Looks like the first outing for whoever takes over from Hong Myung-bo will be a home friendly against Venezuela on September 5th. That one has been officially confirmed, the match on the September 9th international matchday hasn't yet been officially announced but it's almost probably going to be against Uruguay. They are playing Japan on September 5th and then Japan face Venezuela on September 9th and it looks as though those two countries are just going to swap over against Japan and Korea.

I was regretting not being able to see Uruguay until I remembered Suarez won't be there.... I want to take that guy on a night out in Itaewon.

Suarez's behaviour would seem pretty tame compared to what some of the GIs and English teachers get up to at Itaewon on a weekend...

Seemingly the KFA hope to fit in six friendly matches before the Asian Cup rolls around in January. If they've got Venezuela and Jordan confirmed, and Uruguay pretty much confirmed as team three, then that leaves three more games to squeeze in. There's an international week in October which they could fit a couple in, but I would presume they'll play at least one match in Australia to acclimatise before their first group match.

This Paraguayan football website is reporting that Paraguay will play South Korea in October and that they too will also face Japan, although that game is not going to be played until November.

The KFA have indeed confirmed these two fixtures, Venezuela on the 5th and Uruguay on the 8th (not 9th).

The Paraguay game in October is on FIFA.com but not yet 100% confirmed by the KFA.

Good to see they're taking these two matches to stadiums other than Sangam, though they're not travelling pretty far from the capital for either of them - the Venezuela game will take place at the Bucheon Leports stadium and the Uruguay one in Goyang.

Goyang game might well become a hot ticket now that Suarez is not banned from Uruguay's friendlies...should also guarantee that he'll be picked and available to play.

South Korea set for return of 'Lion King' - report

Reuters, Friday August 22 2014

SEOUL, Aug 22 (Reuters) - South Korea forward Lee Dong-gook is set to earn a recall to the national team for first time in over a year for upcoming friendlies against Venezuela and Uruguay, a Korea Football Association (KFA) official said on Friday.
Lee, dubbed the 'Lion King' in South Korea, has been stuck on 99 caps since a 1-0 World Cup qualifying loss to Iran in June last year.
The 35-year-old is enjoying a good run of form for Jeonbuk this season and is the domestic K-League's top scorer. He has scored 30 times for South Korea.
"As long as he isn't injured this weekend, Lee will be on the team," Yonhap news agency quoted a senior KFA official as saying. "Members of the technical committee will travel to different K-League matches to get a final look at the players on the list."
Korea have called up 14 foreign-based players for the matches against Venezuela on Sept. 5 and Uruguay three days later and plan to name 10 or 11 more from the domestic league to complete the squad.
Towering Ulsan striker Kim Shin-wook and several other local-based players are unavailable for the friendlies as they are preparing for the Asian Games in Incheon later in September.
South Korea, who have been without a coach since Hong Myung-bo resigned in July, are using the friendlies to prepare for next January's Asian Cup in Australia. (Writing by Peter Rutherford; Editing by Nick Mulvenney)

Two goals for Lee Dong-guk as he picked up his 100th cap, reckon he's a shoo-in for a seat on the plane to Australia and he'll be handy to have over there to organise the mid-tournament whoring sessions.

Also noticed they've gone with the full names on the back of the shirts now as opposed to the D G Lee style they used at the World Cup. Is this for Stielike's benefit when he's over to watch the Uruguay game?

Twas a most entertaining game, first National team game I've enjoyed for ages. After watching Uruguay tomorrow, I'll have seen exactly half of the Conmebol countries with the potential of ticking Paraguay off next month.

Stielike seems impressed with his new striker:
