Flying Korean Football Managers?

Postby Rothesay Saint » Sat Apr 01, 2017 12:30 pm

I wouldn't normally share an article in the Sun, but this one is too strange not to.

Haven't seen it reported in Korea so far, maybe there'd be more interest in it if his K-pop singing son said he was going to join him.

Naked Ambition

Gangwon boss Choi Yun-kyeom has shocked the traditionally conservative world of Korean football by claiming he will jump off the Alpensia stadium naked if his team triumph in the K-league this season.

The bizzare Alpensia stadium in Pyeongchang has been designed as a multi-sports facility for the forthcoming winter olympics and includes a ski jump as well as hosting Gangwon, the local football team. And Choi, a keen winter sports enthusiast and naturist, says he will make the jump if his team bring home the title.

While only making the league through the playoffs last season, the K-league new boys have spent heavily as they look to raise the profile of sports in Pyeongchang, three hours east of capital Seoul. And barmy boss Choi is certainly doing his part with his bonkers pledge.

The K-league outfit currently sit mid-table after three games but this years title race is seen as one of the most open in years with traditional powerhouses struggling.

Jeonbuk have been skating on thin ice for years with their ref bribing antics, budget cuts at Pohang Steelers have left them with a skeleton squad and Suwon Samsung are currently going downhill faster than Franz Klammer.

It’s not the first odd occurence in Korean football. Three years ago Korean footballer Lee Man-in made headlines after revealing that signing for Seongnam had saved his career after a severe case of Enochlophobia left him unable to play in front of a crowd of more than seven people.

While in neighbouring Suwon, Korean legendary footballer Cha Bum, whose son Duri had a brief spell at Celtic, was crowned ‘King' of the republican country by president Lee Myung-Park after he lost a bizarre bet with the Samsung CEO.

So what are the odds of a Korean naked ski jump this November? One Korean football expert suggested that while slim, they were better than seeing a book on Busan I’cons being published this year - A snowball in hells chance?
Bring back King Cha.

I actually really enjoyed reading my copy of the Busan I'cons book. It's exceptionally well researched and the reprints of photos from this forum came out surprisingly well. Holyjoe could've put a bit more effort into the preface, but you can't have everything.

Yeah, it was a bit easier poking fun at the Martyrs.

Didn't realise that HJ was doing the preface, I think when the book was first started King Sejong was going to write a bit at the beginning...

The founding fathers of Goyang FC.. ten years ago yesterday this was Goyang KB's first National League match of 2007 away at Suwon City, that was their first game after having rejected the chance to 'promote' to the K-League having won the National League title the previous season. These two chaps were extremely pissed off about it and this bloke staged a one man pitch invasion and got himself huckled off by security for the cause. He was pretty much the driving force behind Goyang FC joining the K3 for 2008.. he was Kim Hyun-hui, football journalist who actually ended up being signed for Goyang FC and playing a game or two as a publicity stunt.
