2017 Korean FA Cup Rounds 3 & 4

Postby Holyjoe » Wed Mar 22, 2017 6:45 am

(Round 1&2 thread here).

Round 3 coming up next Wednesday, some interesting ties with both Gyeongnam and Seoul E-Land having tricky away ties against K3 sides and would be a bit of a disaster for either to exit the competition at this stage. Seongnam v Suwon FC is quite a clash so early on in the competition as well.

The draw for Round 4 is already mapped out, Incheon United v Suwon Samsung looks like the biggie with two K1 sides going up against each other but probably the top story would be if FC Anyang overcome Honam University as they'd then be going to Sangam to face FC Seoul.

Round 3 draw (March 29th)
35: Gangneung City v Ansan Greeners
36: Cheonan City v Daejeon Citizen
37: FC Anyang v Honam University

49: Gyeongju KHNP v Sunmoon University
50: Chuncheon Citizen v Korea University
51: Busan Transport v Gimhae
52: Seongnam FC v Suwon FC
53: Mokpo City v Changwon City
54: Youngnam University v Hongik University

As Steve said Pocheon with the first surprise of the competition. Early exit for E-Land.

I'd back Pocheon against anyone - apart from the top 4 of the K-League.

Probably not much of a surprise for K3 fans. Pocheon beat E-Land last season, too. (Granted, that was in a friendly ...)

So if no one is shocked by a shock, is it still a shock? You see this also in cup competitions in Europe, a higher league team that is falling apart losing to a team that is going great guns in a lower league and people still try to call it a shock.

I see that the Seoul vs Anyang match is on. The Anyang fans have a long way to travel to that one. :smt079

Random questions/possible future trivia night answers - I noticed looking through Soccerway that 'Presbyterian Medical Center' who were obliterated 8-0 by Cheongju FC in the second round are apparently the football team of Jeonju's Jesus Hospital. This raises two questions : One, what is it with religious hospitals and football teams? and two - That makes 4 Jeonju teams in this year's FA cup (Presbyterians, Jeonju University, Jeonju City and Jeonbuk). Last season, Cheongju itself had four entrants - FC, City, University and SMC Engineering. Has any city besides Seoul ever had more teams than that playing in the competition in the same season?
This season I will be mostly supporting :
KLClassic - Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors / KLChallenge & National League - Anyone & Everyone / K3 League - Jeonju Citizen

Nexen Tire have their HQ in Yangsan which is on the Busan subway, so in the 2017 competition we have: Nexen Tire, Bugyeong University, Busan FC, Busan Transport and Busan I'Park.

Busan is a football town after all.

Tonight's (and in at least one shameful instance, "this afternoon's") results:

[55] Gimhae City 0-1 Jeju United
[56] Jeonnam Dragons 4-0 Jeonju Citizen
[57] Gangneung City 0-1 Sangju Sangmu
[58] Seongnam FC 3-1 Cheongju City
[59] Aju University 1-2 Asan Mugunghwa
[60] Daegu FC 1-2 Gyeongnam FC
[61] Mokpo City 1-0 Yangpyeong FC
[62] Chuncheon Citizen 1-3 Ulsan Hyundai
[63] Incheon United 0-1 Suwon Samsung
[64] Daejeon Citizen 2-0 Yeongnam University
[65] Busan I'Park 1-0 (aet) Pohang Steelers
[66] Gangwon FC 1-0 Daejeon Korail
[67] Jeonbuk Hyundai 0-0 Bucheon FC 1995 (Bucheon go through on penalties)
[68] Gwangju FC 4-2 (aet) Yonsei University
[69] FC Seoul 2-0 FC Anyang
[70] Gyeongju KHNP 0-2 Pocheon Citizen

The only real surprise was at Tancheon where Seongnam won a game in 90 minutes for the first time in 204 days. Suwon Bluewings also continue to only show up in Cup competitions. Bucheon knocked out Jeonbuk for the second year running, requiring penalties this time. Of course, Jeonbuk richly deserved elimination for bringing the competition into disrepute by kicking off at 3pm on a weekday afternoon because they can't find a stadium with proper floodlights. Busan beat Pohang while Pocheon roll on to hopefully get a crack at another K-League team. Gwangju needed extra-time to knock out Yonsei. Gyeongnam still on course for a Challenge/Cup double.

I went to Sangam where FC Seoul v Anyang was all rather underwhelming. Anyang brought a sizeable contingent who were joined in the away end by a decent number of police. However, they did manage to get enough flares inside to copy Bucheon's antics from last year just before kick off. There was one rather half-hearted banner at full-time as well - no idea if there were incidents outside afterwards once the beer had been flowing for a couple of hours as I left right away but it all seemed rather civilised. Seoul (Yun Illok) scored twice in the first half (the second an absolute howler by the keeper) and promptly shut up shop. Anyang tested Yoo Hyun a couple of times in the second but never really looked like getting back into it.

Excellent! Possibly the first city in history to have more teams in a competition than combined number of supporters? :-P
