When I turn up at a ground once, I'm sure they think I'm a scout for the big leagues but if I go regularly they know I'm a loser foreigner with no existence that hangs around this forum too much...I'm sure they know that about you at Yangju...you've been there so long you look like a cabbage farmer...

Round 12 Results

[67] Jeonju 2:1 Gyeongju
[68] Gimpo 0:1 Cheongju FC
[69] Icheon 3:4 Pocheon
[70] Yangju 2:2 Hwaseong
[71] Chuncheon 0:1 Yangpyeong
[72] Cheongju City 2:0 Paju

Pocheon took a 0:3 lead against Icheon in the first 30 minutes but the home side made things interesting, pulling the score to 2:3, conceding to make it 2:4, then scoring again for 3:4 in the 57th minute. Would have loved to see them score a couple more but, alas, it was not meant to be.

Made it to the Yangju match on Saturday.

Hwaseong scored in the 9th minute from a ball lobbed over midfield to the sprinting 한교원. A Yangju defender was right at his side but the Hwaseong midfielder had the skill to bring the ball under control and fire it past our keeper. The visitors scored again at the 18 minute mark -- a corner eventually found its way to a completely unmarked 최우재 who powered it into the unguarded near post.

Yangju was absolute crap in the first half -- lots of wayward passing, players not making runs into space, the defense going into turtle mode any time Hwaseong regained the ball. A 0:4 or 0:5 defeat looked likely. However, the home side managed to score in first half stoppage time from their first corner of the match and first shot on goal.

I was surprised our number 11 avoided getting a card for all his late challenges and off-the-ball shoving but the only card of the match came when a Hwaseong player accidentally got in the way of our keeper when he was trying to throw the ball into play. Go figure.

Hwaseong controlled much of the second half but, just like in the first, Yangju scored in stoppage time. A corner kick was laid back to our beanpole number 9 who headed it into goal then ran over to kiss his girlfriend in the stands. We'd had a chance before then to draw level when one of our players broke down the wing, cut inside the sole defender, and was then brought down by a tackle from behind. The referee decided that was A-OK, so play on. Meh. :? Happy we got a point but disappointed with the team's attitude for 80 minutes of the match.

Of note, with both Cheongju FC and Cheongju City playing at home this round Cheongju City's match was moved to Sunday. I wonder how much overlap there is between the folks who went to see Cheongju FC on Saturday and those who watched Cheongju City on Sunday.

Caught the Pocheon - Yangju match-up last weekend. Strange to think that this was first versus last in the standings.

Felt like I was traveling back in time once I made it to the stadium -- the signboards were proudly proclaiming 'K3 League 2016' and the ballboy bibs advertised 'Challenger's League' on the front and back. I did spot one long 'K3 Advanced' sign inside though, so it seems the folks in Pocheon have at least some inkling of what's taking place in the rest of the country ...

Pocheon went 2:0 ahead early through two mistakes by our goalkeeper. The first saw a Pocheon player collect an overheard pass while closely marked by a Yangju defender; the following shot caught the keeper flatfooted/out of position and very slowly rolled in for 1:0. The second was a long-range strike that the keeper got his body behind; the ball then squeezed out of his grasp and a Pocheon player was able to run from the top of the box and fire it in before the keeper could get to it.  :?

Yangju did well at putting pressure on Pocheon any time they went forward and forcing them to pass back into their own half because they lacked options going forward. One of Yangju's biggest problems was not enough movement off the ball. There was a free kick opportunity Yangju had in Pocheon's half where every single Yangju player was standing still with a Pocheon player next to them. Not sure how that's supposed to work. Yangju pulled one back following some nice passing around goal and gave us a bit of hope going into the second half.

Pocheon had a player sent off at the 62 minute mark and I thought Yangju would be able to use that to earn at least one point if not all three. Try as they might -- and they did put the Pocheon goal under a lot of pressure -- nothing worked. Pocheon's keeper made several saves, shots were flying just wide of the post, etc. It just wasn't Yangju's day. Or maybe it's more accurate to say ... it just isn't Yangju's season.

Surely one of the fundamental assumptions of season-based seasons is that it all evens out over the season. There's no such thing as an unlucky season. The table never lies.

Or so the thinking goes.

Of course there is no such thing as an unlucky season. But there are conspiracies at work. Just look at how I was regularly cheated out of prediction league trophies, year after year. Disgraceful. Clearly there are duck fetishists among the top brass in K3 towers.

And while we are on conspiracy theories, these crowds look a bit inflated. :)

I haven't paid much attention to which players are new and which are holdovers from previous seasons -- it could be that we have a bunch of newer players that aren't as good as what we've seen in the past. Or, even if we've kept most of our players, it could be that other teams have recruited smartly and left Yangju behind. I had a quick chat with someone from the club after the match and was told that the team (still) does not pay the players.

I don't think the team is 'unlucky' so much as they're just not good enough to be competing at the top of the table. How is it that Yangpyeong can enter the league and end up with two midtable finishes in their first two seasons and Cheongju City can be challenging at the top during that same period of time while Yangju has one season where they finished 5th and now they're sitting at the bottom of the table? They've kept the same coach, so that's not the cause.

One of the thoughts I had on Saturday while talking with the club official was that mediocre teams no longer benefit from playing a combination of 'good teams' and 'bad teams'. If you take a psychological beating from losing to Pocheon then Hwaseong two weeks running you don't get a 'pick me up' by playing Goyang or Uijeongbu in the third week -- you get another difficult opponent like Paju or Icheon instead. Yangju might be suffering more from this than other teams if they were used to playing a schedule where they could score loads against weaker (now, Basic) sides to get into the right mindset going into matches against tougher opponents. (The question, then, would be why they're doing worse than teams like Yangpyeong and Cheongju FC. Granted, those two teams only have 4 points more than Yangju so perhaps the difference isn't as large as the table standings might suggest?)

Another thing I've noticed is that the coaching style in Yangju is different than what I see for other K3 Advanced sides. A team like Pocheon, Hwaseong, or Cheongju City goes out and plays, with a few interjections from their coach during the match. Yangju's coach is always yelling something to the players -- either individually or collectively. "Push up", "Get closer", "Defend", "Pass to the side". It's like he doesn't trust the players to make decisions on their own. Either the players really don't know what they're doing and need the outside input (not encouraging, to say the least), or it's unneeded and serves to distract the players ... or maybe some combination of the two. I don't want a reincarnation of The Quiet One, but I do wonder what the point of all that yelling is. Who knows, maybe it's therapeutic for our coach and it's how he releases the stress that he gets from work during the weekdays?

Here's an article detailing how Goyang managed to get 742 fans to their recent home match (in essence bribery and blackmail)

Looks like the article has "disappeared". This conspiracy runs deep.

Round 14 Results

[79] Icheon 2:1 Gyeongju (223)
[80] Yangju 0:2 Cheongju FC (185)
[81] Chuncheon 0:1 Pocheon (158)
[82] Cheongju City 2:2 Hwaseong (531)
[83] Jeonju 1:2 Yangpyeong (84)
[84] Paju 0:3 Gimpo (215)

Pocheon still on top (5 points ahead of Gimpo) and Yangju still at the bottom (equal on points with Gyeongju but with a worse GD).

Attended the Yangju-Cheongju FC match. It started pouring in the first half and we had a scrappy midfield battle with neither side getting too many chances going forward. Yangju was more aggressive in the second half and saw two shots hit the post, but Cheongju won from two counterattacks that saw them get a lot of bodies forward very quickly. Both teams subbed out their keeper in the last couple of minutes which seemed a bit odd, especially for Cheongju.

Won a bag of rice from the halftime raffle plus had a player bring me over some Pocari Sweat. Would have preferred a victory, to be a honest.
