Re: World Cup 2018

Well I'm glad I'm not in the UK right now. It's been almost 20 years since I lived in England, but seeing the explosion of hype and wagon jumping after wins against Panama and now Sweden is bringing it all back to me. I'm fresh out of proper teams to support now, I'm down to Belgium. Not a good sign...

Re: World Cup 2018

That was fun :D. I'm happy for the team and especially Son Heung-min who clearly enjoyed it. I heard that the players didn't know what was happening in the other match, which seems an odd thing to do, but maybe it helped them not give up entirely. Amazingly, Korea squandered a number of good opportu...

Re: World Cup 2018

Things have been a bit low-key around here and I am deliberately keeping a low profile at work. But my local coffee shop subscribes to one of those left-wing newspapers (taz) that people with beards read and runs articles about how an interest in football isn't really compatible with progressive pol...

Re: World Cup 2018

The last time we were relying on an already eliminated Peru not to roll over and give up a bunch of goal difference to a Southern Hemisphere team beginning with "A" with a well known attitude to fair play, this happened: Argentina vs Peru 1978: Argentina needed to win by four goals to make...

Re: World Cup 2018

While I generally agree, he didn't need his right arm raised to use his body to get in the way of the ball. Blatant hand ball in my books. He'd need his left (lower) arm out for something to land on, but he could have tucked in his right arm, no? He could have tucked it in, and I agree as the laws ...

Re: World Cup 2018

So in the end a stupid-rule-penalty was the difference. Beautiful goal from Son, I enjoyed that but they looked absolutely shattered at the end. Match fitness not what it was back in 2002.

Re: World Cup 2018

If you're a defender you can't have arms in the penalty area. According to the rules you're supposed to leave them at the edge of the box. The unnatural position rule is one of the dumbest in football. How are people supposed to jump with their arms by their sides or slide with their arms behind the...

Re: World Cup 2018

We haven't discussed about Korea's change white shirts at the World Cup yet.

From a distance it can look like someone has been sick down the front.

Re: World Cup 2026

My home city of Vancouver won't be a host city, as they gave the finger to FIFA's demands of a blank cheque. Good on them, I say. Canada hosted the Women's World Cup all on its own in 2015, but I don't see much legacy from the expensive, one-month circus. Still no professional women's teams; hell, ...

Re: World Cup 2018

I thought they did OK. Certainly better than I was expecting and better than Luxembourg. Losing to a VAR penalty is probably the closest you can fairly come to not losing. Credit to Shin for starting all three of his forwards. Picking an attacking line-up and then defending deeply is just the sort o...

Rothesay Saint wrote:Good predictions so far. Particularly liking the one about Ronaldo already having had his time in the sun. :0)

He can score as many goals as he likes. The prediction is that he isn't going to lead Portugal to the World Cup title, because that would just be greedy.

Re: World Cup 2018

Uh-oh. Shin is playing the race card. They've got nothing. This is going to be painful to watch. https://www.bbc.com/sport/football/44513453 You can tell who the Western spies are at Korean football matches. They have them all the way down to K3 level, standing around awkwardly in their anoraks, not...

Re: World Cup 2026

Goodness, even Russia voted for the US. I can't figure out who's friends with who any more, it's like the abridged version of 1984 in here. Kudos to France, Italy, Brazil and the Benelux for supporting Morocco. I wonder if it will cost them now. Hopefully Canada and Mexico are getting along with the...
